Bathroom cleaning doesn't just involve disinfecting surfaces or frequently changing towels. The daily act of flushing the toilet without putting the lid down can have invisible health consequences , warns a medical professional who has studied this habit in detail.
Anesthesiologist and health educator David Callejo has shared a clear warning on social media about this common practice in many homes. His message is supported by scientific studies and focuses on environmental hygiene , especially in areas where everyday items such as toothbrushes and towels are present.

" You have to close the lid . When you flush the toilet, aerosols are generated that spread throughout the bathroom," Callejo explained in a video posted on his Instagram profile. According to him, these aerosols can contain bacteria and viruses that end up depositing on multiple surfaces, including oral hygiene utensils. Therefore, beyond being a bad habit for many men, closing the toilet lid will save us from many health problems.
To support his warning, Callejo cites research conducted by the University of Colorado , which analyzed the dispersion of microscopic particles when flushing a toilet. The results confirmed that, without the lid down, the flushed water releases a cloud of contaminated droplets that can remain suspended for several minutes. These can settle on surfaces, be inhaled, or ingested.
"It has been observed that fecal bacteria are present on toothbrushes when they are near the toilet," warns the expert. This constant exposure to pathogens, such as E. coli, salmonella, or Clostridium difficile , which can contaminate bathroom objects and cause infections, underscores the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, even in small daily routines. Closing the lid before flushing the toilet is, according to Callejo, a simple but effective step to prevent the spread of microorganisms.
